It consists of creating a small hole in the zona pellucida, which is a membrane surrounding the embryo’s cells. The embryo has to hatch out of the zona pellucida to be implanted. This small hole is created, amongst other cases, when embryos have a deformed zona pellucida or when it is thicker than average, creating difficulties to hatch on its own.
