It is a supplemental technique to ICSI. Naturally, as in conventional IVF, only the most mature sperm with a lower percentage of damaged DNA are able to bind to the zona pellucida of the egg and fertilise it. With the ICSI technique we skip this step and therefore the natural sperm selection. The PICSI technique (physiological ICSI) allows us to select the most mature sperm with the lowest percentage of damaged DNA and use it to fertilise the egg with ICSI.
It is especially recommended in cases of recurrent abortions, poor embryo quality in a previous cycle and for couples in which the male has been tested for sperm DNA fragmentation.
