Embryo transfer consists of placing the embryo or embryos in the patient’s uterus. One or two of the highest quality embryos are chosen to be transferred, although the number will depend on the patient’s age and medical record. The remaining high quality embryos which are not going to be transferred are frozen and stored for future use. The patient may take the decision to transfer them in a new cycle, if she wishes.
This is a simple, painless procedure that is performed without anaesthesia in an aseptic environment. Embryo transfer is performed with a slender flexible cannula which is inserted as far as the endometrium via the cervix.
